US Defence giant Raytheon have indicated their confidence in the UK by announcing a further investment of £25m into the Raytheon UK operation in Harlow. This will create a Technology Centre of Excellence and is expected to generate over 100 high skilled jobs. Already heavily involved with Schools, colleges and the Harlow University Technical College Raytheon also have a well-established Graduate programme and are considering furthering its apprenticeship programme to the new site. This is a clear indication that the company recognises the quality of innovative people and businesses in the area that will ensure the success of the new Centre. Whereas the Southwest and Northwest of the UK have been predominantly clusters of international Security and Defence businesses, this latest investment shows that the East of England is continuing to attract such businesses. With a high focus on STEM learning in the region companies such as Airbus, MBDA, Leornado, Lockheed Martin and GSK have all made positive announcements about their businesses and significantly Airbus, LM and GSK have all committed to major investment and development in the area.
